Ich geh mit meiner Laterne ...

Hoi An, the UNESCO world heritage site midway between Hanoi in the north and Ho-Chi-Minh in the south is famous for its Chinese and Japanese influences. It is definitely touristy and instagrammable photo motives appear more important than its culture and history. However, the old town is very charming with its colourful lanterns in the streets and on the boats and the nicely restored buildings, the Japanese bridge and the temples. In its defence one must acknowledge that if you are looking for a bit of history you can find it in places such as the folklore museum. It displays some of the crafts that have developed in Hoi An over the centuries including its famous tailoring that is present to this day.

Spoiler alert, in preparation for our upcoming visit to Angkor Wat we visited the My Son Hindu temples which were built by the Cham people between the 4th and 14th century AD and heavily destroyed during the Vietnam war.
