Back to Big City Life

Back to the big city, after beaches in Thailand and colonial architecture in Penang, we were ready for the capital of Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur was only established in 1859 as a mining town, but has experienced phenomenal growth since then. Nowadays, more than 1.7 million people call the city their home and the metropolitan area has more than 7.25 million inhabitants. Besides all the multinational companies which have set-up shop in KL, the city is developing into the global centre of Islamic Finance and is home to the The World Bank’s Global Knowledge and Research Hub. The city itself, due to its “young” age does not feature a lot of historic landmarks or attractions.

Nevertheless, there are so many different things to see and explore. Of course, one needs to visit the famous Petronas Towers, the Batu caves, Mosques and temples, but overall you should come for the city itself. The city has a fairly laid back vibe, which makes discovering it fairly convenient. We strolled through Little India, China Town to see the historical side of town and went to the Islamic museum and art galleries to learn more about the religion and enjoy its beautiful art. However, the highlight after a day of ticking off Lonley Planet sights,  were definitely evenings in Bukit Bintang with all its polished malls, foodcourts and people watching opportunities. Overall, the city needs to be experienced as a whole, and not a collection of individual sights or landmarks.
