Sunbathing on the island of Ko Tao

Ko Tao, is a relatively new tourist destination, receiving the first visitors in the 1980s. Prior to that time, the island was mostly uninhabited, served as a prison island in the 1930s and 40s and was used as a shelter for fisherman during storms. It is part of the Samui archipelago, which is named after Ko Samui, the largest and most famous island in the area.

Despite the island being loved by divers and for snorkelling, we mostly stayed above water, enjoyed the beautiful beaches, hiked to viewpoints and in general relaxed. We stayed at probably one of the most touristy spots of the island, Sairee beach. However, despite it being fairly busy, it doesn’t feel too crowded and we always got a good spot on the beach to sunbath and a table at our favourite restaurant for dinner.
