Malaysia, one of the 17 megadiverse countries in the world
We probably did the standard whistle stop tour of Malaysia with stops in Georgetown, Kuala Lumpur and Malacca. Therefore, we unfortunately only had the chance to experience one part of the country and we will surely comeback to visit the other part on Borneo. Malaysia, felt very different from the previously visited countries. The country is much less focused and dependent on tourism. It is considered a newly industrialised nation, with a strong standing in manufacturing and services and has a great transportation infrastructure. As tourists, we were still able to experience local life a bit by going to food courts mostly frequented by locals and were also able to discover some of the less shiny parts and underlying issues (e.g. empty developments, half-finished buildings), which was more difficult elsewhere. Prior to visiting Malaysia, we didn’t know much about the country, but now after experiencing its laid back atmosphere combined with a fairly efficient and structured approach to things, we are wondering why it doesn’t seem to feature much on the list of vacation destinations.
